Among the most critical of skills to have as an internal workplace investigator is conducting fair and comprehensive investigative interviews. To be more specific, an essential skill of an internal workplace investigator is crafting and asking effective interview questions. Asking effective interview questions will not only help the internal workplace investigator draw conclusions regarding the matter being investigated, it will ensure that the questions being asked will be able to withstand the potential scrutiny of a third party like an arbitrator or the human rights tribunal.

Devan Corrigan is the Principal for Corrigan HR Consulting based in Moncton, New Brunswick. He has had over 20 years of experience in human resources spanning multiple industries. Devan has conducted over 150 workplace investigators as both an internal and an external investigator. In addition to his consulting work, Devan is the lead facilitator for the Queen’s University Industrial Relations Centre (IRC) professional program Mastering Fact-Finding & Investigation.
